Homemade Tartar Sauce

By Sam Pierce

Ingredients (~1 1/2 cups)

  • 1 1/2 cups mayonnaise
  • 3 Tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp minced onion
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp fresh dill, minced
  • 3 Tbsp lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Mix Everything Together

In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, pickle relish, minced onion, fresh dill, and lemon juice until well combined.

The mixture will look a bit chunky from the relish and dill – that’s exactly what you want.

Season with salt and pepper; Start with 1/4 tsp salt and a few grinds of black pepper, then taste and adjust.

Let the Flavors Develop

Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.

This resting time allows the onion to mellow out and all the flavors to blend together.

The sauce will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days – after that, the fresh dill starts to lose its punch.

Homemade Tartar Sauce

Making tartar sauce from scratch takes about 5 minutes and tastes way better than the jarred stuff. Perfect for fish and chips or any fried seafood.
