What You Need
- 2 large eggs
- 2 slices whole grain bread
- Sea salt and black pepper
- Canola oil spray
Make the Bread Wells
Hit your air fryer basket with canola oil spray.
Put a slice of bread in the basket and grab a glass or round cookie cutter. Press down firmly to make a well in the center – you want a good indent here.
Use your fingers to press the bottom of the well flatter. This keeps the egg from sliding under the bread while it cooks.
Crack in the Egg
Crack an egg directly into the well. Some white will overflow onto the bread – that’s fine, it’ll cook into the toast.
Season with salt and pepper right away.
Air Fry at 340F
Set your air fryer to 340F and cook for ~8 minutes for a runny yolk with set whites.
If you want cheese, throw a small handful of shredded cheese on top at the ~7 minute mark. It’ll melt perfectly in that last minute.
Getting it Out
The egg can be delicate when it’s still runny, so slide a spatula under the whole thing to lift it out.
The bottom of the bread should be golden and crispy, the top slightly toasted, and your egg cooked to preference.
Dialing in Your Egg
After making these a few times, you’ll figure out your perfect timing:
- ~7 minutes at 340F: runny yolk, whites still a bit loose
- ~8 minutes at 340F: runny yolk, whites fully set (my go-to)
- ~9 minutes at 330F: jammy yolk, set whites
- ~10 minutes at 330F: fully cooked through
Drop to 330F for longer cook times – keeps the bread from burning while the egg finishes. The bread will be darker at 10 minutes but still good.
Repeat with your second piece of bread or cook both at once if your air fryer’s big enough. Just make sure they’re not touching.
